Designing Indigenous Styles - DiSmob

DiSmob was born out of the need for Indigenous art to be creative and innovative in it's approach to give young people opportunities to experiment with the development of their artworks into pieces of design while still maintaining the integrity of being Indigenous art. Initiated through funding from the Queensland Department of Education - REACH program and developed by ingeous studios, DiS mob is an innovative approach to NOW Indigenous arts.

As a focus of the development of the project student from the three Cairns school involved, ingeous studios integrated traditional practices of
design and illustration with digital practice. The students ranging from 14-17 years of age learnt how to take their illustrated concepts from paper to computer and to final production stages.

DiSmob showed the students that their is more to the arts industry than just painting on canvas and that creativity can be used in other ways and that it's important to be innovative.

"It's a fresh look at where not just Indigenous art but artwork generally can be taken and what we can do, while maintaining the approach that it remains sustainable and drive by the students currently involved".

An important part of the project was to develop it with a sustainable approach in mind and with the initial small amount of funding for the workshops from the Department of Education it is envisaged that the project will be taken up as a business opportunity for the students involved, that is industry grounded. The projects initial focus was on the development of something unique that has not been seen before and that is urban Indigenous focussed, hence the development of a series of Skateboard ART decks.

Presently DiSmob are scoping the idea of having an SKARt Exhibition (Skate ART) to be held annually where local and national Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists would be approached to design skateboard decks for auction, with all benefits going back into project business development.

The long-term goal of DiSmob is to produce retail quality Indigenous artworks on products ranging from Skateboard decks, lounges, fashion garments, homewares and anything that is not currently in the marketplace. An exhibition of the decks and other items will be held in the coming month at a location that someone offers to us, as support for this great project.
